Description: Alkekengi officinarum (Japanese Lanterns) is a member of the Solanaceae (Nightshade) family. The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 1, page 39, under the then accepted scientific name of Physalis alkekengi, recorded that this native of the South of Europe was introduced to Britain in 1548.
