Description:  Clematis tangutica and C. orientalis (Golden or Oriental Clematis) are members of the Ranunculus Family (Ranunculaceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 3, p. 344 recorded Clematis orientalis is a native of the Levant and was first known to be cultured in Britain in 1731.  It did not list C. tangutica separately as it was considered a variety of C. orientalis at the time.
