Anethum graveolens (Dill) growing in a modern garden
Anethum graveolens (Dill) from François Pierre Chaumeton, Flore médicale, vol. 1, plate 26, 1833
Common Names:  Dill

Description: Anethum graveolens (Dill) is a member of the Parsley Family ( Apiaceae). It is not mentioned by the Hortus Kewensis but is native to South-West Asia or South-East Europe and has been cultivated since ancient times.  This is a tentative identification because the illlustration is quite stylized.  It is based on the very thin leaves shown in the illustration and because it is shown in a barnyard scene rather than the wetland scenes depicted on the textile suggesting it is a cultivated crop. Dill's appearance is similar to several other parsley family plants that are often found under cultivation including fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and carrots  (Daucus carota).
