Common Names: Coreopsis, Tickseed, Calliopsis
Description: Coreopsis sp. (Tickseed) is a member of the Aster Family (Asteraceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 5 recorded eighteen different species including Coreopsis lanceolata, which had been introduced to cultivation in Europe in 1724 and was native to "Carolina" i.e. the United States. Determining which Coreopsis species the textile designer used as a model is impossible given the somewhat stylized motif.
