Common Names: Double anemone

Description: Anemone coronaria (Double Anemone) is a member of the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). William Aiton's Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 3 recorded that this plant, native of the Levant, was introduced to cultivation in Britain in 1596.

Anemones were extremely popular with specialized plant breeders, then called florists, from the time of their introduction to Britain in the sixteenth century.  Ruth Duthie comments in her book Florists' Flowers and Societies "When Furber's Twelve Months of Flowers appeared in 1730, anemonies were still popular; in the illustrations they are second in number to auriculas" (auriculas are the most frequently illustrated flower in that publication).  Duthie also mentions "John Edwards, a muslin designer by trade, illustrated many florists' flowers in the British Herbal of 1770, including the anemone."*  Double anemonies were one of the most frequently illustrated flowers  found on quilts and chintz from the period from about 1775 to about 1850 as may be seen from the number and variety of motifs described on this multi-page set of examples of Anemone coronaria (Double Anemone).
